Heat Exchange: How today’s policies will drive or delay Canada’s transition to clean, reliable heat for buildings

The Canadian Climate Institute  just published new research that finds provinces should stop expanding gas infrastructure and invest in electrification to ensure building heating remains reliable and affordable in the transition to clen energy.

It is clear that meeting our climate goals requires switching to electricity for building heat. But many places in Canada continue to default to gas for heating, and more critically, are still sinking money into new gas infrastructure. If gas networks continue to develop, Canada will find itself economically liable for billions of dollars of obsolete infrastructure, and no chance of meeting its climate goals.

Another key report published by the Sustainable Dialogues science coalition also argues for this transition. Over 70 of Canada’s scientific achieved a consensus on the path forward to meeting Canada’’s international commitment. When are provincial governments going to listen to the evidence.
